Through the Lens of Disability: A Journey and Guide To Owning a Century Home
Homeownership is a challenge. A thing many people wouldn't even dream of accessing. Something I didn't dream of. Until I accidentally learned it was possible.
Living on SSDI, limited in my capacity by chronic illness, and desperate to live in a place where I was in control, I took the leap and purchased my very on century home for $35,000 in the summer of 2024.
I've written this guide - documenting all I learned in the process and all I've learned in hindsight - to be a community resource to help you better evaluate if homeownership is within your means and then make you feel more in control of the process. Most guides are designed for people with ample resources, with little consideration towards disability.
Let this be a place to start. My advice and experience isn't limited to being useful for other folks with chronic illness, and I hope anyone who may be low income or a first time home buyer or simply overwhelmed by the need to get out of where you are now, can be helped by the information I've put together.
This is a pay what you like - yes even $0 - resource, any proceeds will go towards my own home repairs. Thank you, and good luck!
